Our team has personal experience as both members of the military and family members of Veterans. We understand the specific needs of our military personnel when it comes to mental health and substance use treatment.

Addiction is a disease that does not discriminate and impacts millions of people across the nation. The risk factors for developing a substance use disorder vary from person to person. However, there are specific

circumstances, career paths, or life events that elevate one’s risk for turning to substances as a way to cope with trauma or mental health symptoms.

The experiences of our nation’s Veterans and Active Duty Service Members are not always light-hearted or pleasant.

Many witness the trauma and emotional turmoil that results from a tour of duty in active combat or experiencing physical, sexual, or emotional trauma during their time in service. Others struggle with the difficulties of adjusting to civilian life post-discharge. Regardless of the root causes, as many as one in fifteen Veterans (from all branches of the armed services) use a controlled substance.

As many as 76% of Veterans who struggle with a substance use disorder meet the diagnostic criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Knowing these numbers, Lionheart Recovery Center has created a hand-crafted program made for the specific needs of Veterans and Active Duty Service Members who are struggling with substance use disorder. Our exclusive Military program utilizes the following specialized addiction treatment services:

Understanding the Disease of Addiction

Why are Veterans and Active Duty Service Members Prone to Drug & Alcohol Use?

The rate of addiction among United States Veterans and Active Duty Service Members remains high. Several factors put Veterans and Active Duty Service Members at increased risk for developing a substance use disorder. The first and likely most notable is exposure to trauma. Military service is daunting and those serving in armed forces can witness extreme violence. Men and women with a history of multiple deployments, especially to active combat areas, are at a high risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health issues that can lead to overwhelming symptoms. Some individuals who develop these conditions will turn to drugs or alcohol to self-medicate and reduce the intensity of symptoms such as nightmares and sleeping difficulties. Also, returning home after a tour of duty can pose its own unique series of different yet equally fatal challenges for the men and women who have served in the armed forces. When discharged from military service, it’s all too common for someone to struggle with being a civilian again. Many Veterans are unable to assimilate and find it hard to relate to their family and friends.

Active Duty Service Members and Veterans face unique barriers to treatment for alcoholism, addiction, and mental health challenges. Veterans experience some of the highest homelessness rates in the U.S., with nearly 10% of the homeless population being Veterans—75% of whom struggle with mental health or addiction. For Active Duty Members, stigma remains a significant obstacle. The fear of judgment or career impact often prevents individuals from seeking help for mental health or substance use issues. Both groups are further impacted by trauma, such as combat exposure, sexual trauma, and high-stress environments, which contribute to conditions like PTSD, depression, and reliance on substances to cope. Addressing these barriers through trauma-informed, stigma-free care is essential to ensure Service Members and Veterans receive the support they need and deserve.
The Need for True Dual-Diagnosis, Trauma-Informed Care

The Importance of Treating Mental Health & Co-Occurring Disorders

The incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among both Active Duty Military Personnel and Veterans is significant, with rates as high as 30% among Veterans. Mental health conditions like PTSD, anxiety, and depression frequently co-occur with substance use disorders in both male and female service members. For Active Duty Personnel and Veterans struggling with co-occurring disorders—both mental health and substance use—substances may be used to self-medicate intrusive symptoms related to mental health challenges. While self-medicating may offer temporary relief, over time, it can worsen symptoms of PTSD, intensify substance use, and lead to further complications. For Active Duty Service Members, this behavior can also impact mission readiness and overall performance, adding another layer of stress. Treating mental health conditions as part of a dual diagnosis treatment program provides healthier, safer, and more effective strategies for managing symptoms. This integrated approach addresses the root causes of co-occurring disorders, offering the tools and support needed for long-term recovery and improved mental well-being.
